THE DEATH OF MEVLANA
"Mesnevi" was written and finished, but Mevlana was extremely exhausted.
He was already an old man and, in particular, was suffering discomfort
from his liver. The leading doctors of the period were unable to make a
definite diagnosis of his illness. Mevlana constantly complained of
high fever. When Seyh Sadreddin came to visit and wished for his
healing, Mevlana said, "May healing be yours, a shirt made of skin
separates the lover from his loved one. Do you not want his union with
the lights?", and recited a poem expressing his longing for death. Mevlana,
whose illness advanced day by day, closed his eyes on the world on the
night of 16-17 December 1273. All the people of Konya, the great men of
state, Christians and Jews attended his funeral.
The night of Mevlana's death is rememberred with ceremonies every year as
"Sheb-i Arus", the "Bridal Night". The people who pour into Konya from
the four corners of the earth have only one aim: to unite in his philosophy,
his love of humanity and his optimism.
