The Cradle of Christianity: “Anatolia”
Istanbul: One of the most important orthodox patriarchates of the world is found in Istanbul, where the first vice council meetings were held. Hagia Sofia, which is well preserved, forms the centre of Christianity in this splendid city, which is a bridge between the two continents. Also for the members of the Orthodox Church the Fener Patriarch is of great importance. |
Içel Tarsus: Tarsus is the birth place of St.Paulus, who was one of the twelve apostles and helped Christianity spread on in Anatolia.
Bursa Iznik: The first of nineteen council meetings were held in Anatolia. Especially the first and the seventh meetings, which were of importance for the traditional council meetings to be developed, were held in Iznik Hagia Sophia Church and the castle of the council.
The first traces of Christianity: In the first Century Antiochia, today called Antakya, was very important for the world of Christianity. According to the traditional belief “The testament of Malta” was written here. The word “Christian” was firstly found and said in Antakya. (Apostle 11,12-26) St.Paulus left Antiochia to introduce the testament to Heiden/Götzen. Also St.John, who was named as the “golden mouthed”, was from Antiochia. Antakya is famous for its churches carved in the rocks in the cave of Petrus.
St.Petrus Church: The firstly built church in the world: Ones who believed in the Christ had used the word “Christian” in this church for the very first time. The church was announced to be sacred in 1963 by Pope Paul 6. Every year on 29 July Christian ceremonies are made here. Also the monastery of St.Simon and the remains of the harbour of Seleucia, where St.Paulus first started for his mission, are the other remarkable and sacred places to see.
Izmir – Ephesus: St.Mary’ s Home: The sacred church of Mary, which is called “Panaya Kapulu”, in Christianity, is located on Mount Bülbül, 420 m high and is 9 km from Selçuk. After the Christ had been crucified, St.John drove away St.Mary from Jerusalem to Ephesus and hid her in Mount Bülbül. It is known that she lived until the age of 101 and died there. In the same place a “cross” shaped church was built in her name. Her home was announced to be sacred in 1967 by the pope. Sometimes in the August ceremonies are made and everyone who visits her church becomes pilgrims.
Cappadocia: Cappadocia, a Mystical compound of culture, historical and visual beauty, is the place where St.Paulus let the first church to be built after thirty years of missionary work. Cappadocia is one of the most important and interesting places in Turkey for its numerous churches where well preserved frescos are found. In the Göreme Valley, Zelve, Çavuş, Ortahisar, Ibrahimpaşa, Mustafapaşa, Yeşilöz and Aksaray, there are more than 220 churches carved in rocks.
Isparta: One of the churches known as the church of St.Paulus is found in the antique city called Antiochia of Yalvaç. St.Paulus, who became a citizen of the city Rome, was baptized and in the year 46 AD, with St.Barnabas, come to this city, where he preached formally for the first time.
Santa Claus: St.Nicholas, known as Santa Claus, lived in Demre and died here in 4th C. A.D. Every year in December some ceremonies are made in his name and St.Nicholas’ s church is worth seeing.
Traces of Christianity in Turkey: Besides the regions mentioned above, there are some other places and cities which are of great importance for Christianity like Mardin – Deyr’ ul Zaferan, Trabzon – Sumela Monastry, Van – Akdamar island and churches, Karaman – churches of Deyle, Derbe and Binbir and Mount Ağrı. |
